There are two different stories about how my great great great grandfather could of come to America and where he came from.
The first story about my great great great grandfather, Peter Whittinghill, was that his last name was Vittenberg and he was a german mercenary who came over during the revolution to fight for the British. When he arrived, he anglacized his name to Whittinghill and in a few months he defected to the Americans.
The second story is that he was a Prussian with the last name Vittenstadt who stowed away on a British ship to avoid the Seven Years War. However the ship's captain discovered him during the journey. My ancestor then befrended the ship captain to the point that when they arrived the captain willingly sponsered him for citizenship and he anglacized his name to Whittinghill
Either way, there is proof that he fought in the american revolution for the colonials. This proof comes from a document which states that he was court marshalled for not attending a general muster.
After the revolutionary war, my great great great grandfather lived in Virginia u
